CAIRO - 30 December 2019: The cultural and the artistic scene in Egypt was very rich in 2019. Numerous events, festivals, concerts, conferences and seminars took place this year. Before we say goodbye 2019, Egypt Today will give its readers glimpses on what happened this year in the cultural and artistic sector.

70- Egyptian megastar Amr Diab and veteran comedian Mohamed Henedy participated in MDL Beast Festival that took place from December 19-21 in Saudi Arabia.

71- Amr Diab was featured by Spotify on a massive billboard in the heart of Times Square with the tagline “This is Amr Diab”.

72- The second edition of World Youth Forum Theater was inaugurated on Friday, December 13 under the auspices of President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi. President Sisi and Egypt’s First Lady Entissar al-Sisi attended the WYF theater inauguration ceremony. Acclaimed Italian Sand artist Fatmir Mura presented a sand drawing show at the inauguration of the World Youth Forum Theater on Friday, December 13.



73-Renowned director Samir Seif passed away on the evening of Dec.9 at the age of 72 due to a sudden cardiac arrest.

74-Synergy company headed by veteran producer Tamer Mursi receives two prominent awards from Bea World Awards.These awards are considered the most two important awards in the world in the field of sports events. Synergy claimed the second rank in World Sports Events , as well as receiving People’s Choice award. The leading production company was granted these two prestigious awards because of the outstanding organisation of African Cup of Nations 2019. Synergy performed a dazzling organisation to the AFCON opening and closing, following the latest techniques that weren't executed before in any other tournaments.

75-“ El Feloos” (Money) movie by director Said El Marouk and starring superstar Tamer Hosny was released in theatres across the Arab world on December 25. The movie features caricatures a notable cast beside Hosny such as Khaled Elsawy, Zeina, Aicha Ben Ahmed, and Mohamed Sallam surrounded by fire, flying cash and luxurious towers in Cairo and other cities around the world, which preparing the audience for a thrilling game.The film features Seif, a scammer who helps the rich beauty Hala to restore her money from another scammer. In an endless series of games and deception, the concepts of love, friendship and life are no longer clear.Money is scripted by Mohamed Abdelmoati,based on a concept by Tamer Hosny.

76-The General Authority of Culture Palaces, headed by Ahmed Awad, launched the activities of the Literary Conference of Egypt at its thirty-fourth edition in Port Said Governorate, from December 9 to 12. The conference came under the title “Cultural Mobility and the Awareness Crisis ... Creativity and Reception” and bears the name of renowned late poet Bayram al-Tunisi.


77-The Egyptian General Book Organization, headed by Haitham al-Hag Ali, participates in the book fair held by the American University in Cairo. The book fair launched on Dec. 15 on the sidelines of the third conference on Arabic and Linguistics "Heritage and Renewal". The conference was attended by Head of the authority's central marketing department Mohamed el-Fiqi. This comes as part of the expansion plan of book fairs directed by Minister of Culture Inas Abdel Dayem for reaching all segments of society.

78-Port Said Governorate was chosen as the capital of Egyptian culture in 2020. Minister of Culture Inas Abdel Dayem and Head of the General Organization of Culture Palaces Ahmed Awwad met with Governor of Port Said Adel al-Ghadban to discuss ways to intensify the creative activities in the governorate. Furthermore, ways to promote cultural activities and enhance the mechanisms of discovering and nurturing talented people from the governorate through the Talent Development Center at the Cultural Palace were discussed.

79- Egyptian-American stars Rami Malek and Ramy Youssef are nominated to Golden Globe awards for 2020.Youssef is nominated to Best Actor TV Comedy/Musical award for his role as Ramy Hassan on the Hulu comedy series ‘’Ramy’’ , while Malek is nominated for Best Actor TV Series – Drama for his role in the famous American drama thriller television series ‘’Mr. Robot’’.

80- Minister of Culture Inas Abdel Dayem announced the restoration of the 16th part of the Qur'an manuscript of Sultan Al-Ashraf Qansuh al-Ghuri (1446- 1516) that was offered for sale at Chiswick English Auctions House. Abdel Dayem referred to the historical artifacts as part of Egypt’s identity.

81-Archaeology Magazine chose Khuwy tomb which was uncovered in Saqqara as one of the most ten important discoveries in the world in 2019. Khuwy tomb is a unique located in Saqqara area. The tomb belongs to a man named Khuwy who was one of the nobles living in the era of the fifth dynasty in the Old Kingdom.

82- Famed Egyptian-Candian star Mena Massoud latest series ‘’Reprisal’’ was screened for the first time on Hulu Network on December 6. Revenge is the main theme of the series.Reprisal revolves around a relentless woman who decided to revenge after being left for dead by a bombastic gang of gearheads. Beside Massoud the series stars Abigail Spencer, Rodrigo Santoro, Madison Davenport, among others.

83-UNAIDS MENA applauds the HIV women’s rights champion Nicolas Mouawad for his strong activism fighting against HIV and gender based violence. This came in honor of World AIDS Day.

84-Veteran actor and head of Actors Syndicate Ashraf Zaki was elected as head of the Academy of Arts. Zaki has been the temporary head of the Academy of Arts since 2018, succeeding Ahlam Younis, who reached the legal age of retirement.

85- Ahmed Ezz’s new play “Aladdin” was staged in KSA on December 23 within the activities of Riyadh Season. “Aladdin” stars beside Ezz, Mohamed Tharwat, Hisham Ismail, Karim Afifi, Islam Ibrahim and Tara Emad. It is written by a workshop including Hassan el-Mahdi, Mohamed Galal, Mohamed Talaat, Ahmed Sheko and Diaa Mohamed. It is directed by Magdy el-Hawari.

86- General Supervisor of the Recovered Antiquities Department Shaaban Abdul Gawad revealed that the National Commission for Recovered Antiquities could stop the sale of an important archaeological painting held by a merchant in New York. The merchant acquired a forged export permit in 1970. The painting will return to Egypt after completing the necessary investigations and procedures.

87- The comedy series "Heshmat in the White House," starring Bayoumi Fouad, was broadcasted exclusively on the digital platform WATCHiT on Dec. 4. “Heshmat Fel Bait El-Abyad” (Heshmat in the White House) revolves around a man of Egyptian origins named Heshmat, who decides to run for presidency in the US. Heshmat (embodied by Bayoumi Fouad) wins the elections and becomes the first American president of Egyptian origins to ever enter the White House. “Heshmat Fel Bait El-Abyad” is directed by Mostafa Fekri. “Heshmat Fel Bait El-Abyad” stars Bayoumi Fouad, Inaam Salousa, Badriya Tolba, Hamdy el-Merghany, Islam Gamal, Heba Abdel Ghany, Rania Mallah, Ahmed Gamal Said, Ahmed Raafat, and Asmaa Galal, as well as a large group of guests of honor.

88- The Italian agency ANSA praised the artistic dialogues between Egypt and Italy after the Ministry of Culture launched the activities of the new season of the Egyptian Academy of Arts in Rome. The season is held under the title "Egypt and Italy: Dialogues of Art and Creativity."

89- Egyptian megastar Tamer Hosny performed on Dec. 6 a song he composed on the occasion of the UAE’s Year of Tolerance at Abu Dabi's Marina Mall and will receive an award for his achievements. Hosny broke a Guinness World Record for the most contributions to a bulletin board on this event.

90- On December 3, famed Egyptian folk singer Shaaban Abdel Rahim passed away at the age of 62 at Maadi Military Hospital after a struggle with disease. Abdel Rahim, also known as Shaabola, is an Egyptian (Sha'abi) singer who is famous for his songs with political themes. The reason behind Abdel Rahim's success was the simplicity of both his songs and character which made him very close to Sha’abi people. His humble language and bold lyrics have made him very popular.

91- Egyptian movie "Egyptian Jeanne d'Arc" was screened at the 27th African Diaspora International Film Festival (ADIFF) in New York that kicked off from November 29 -December 5.

92- After a hiatus of two years, veteran comedian Samir Ghanem announced that he will return to theater with the play “El-Zahr Lama Yelaab”.According to Ghanem, the new play is scheduled to be staged in one of the new theaters in Cairo once the rest of the cast is decided upon. Ghanem’s latest theatrical show was titled “Sebouni Aghani”.

93- On Tuesday 3 December Egyptian minister of Culture Inas Abdel Dayem, , Governor of Alexandria Mohamed El Sherif, Director of Bibliotheca Alexandrina Dr. Mostafa El Feky, and head of the Academy of Arts Dr. Ashraf Zaki, inaugurated the first edition of Alexandria Arab Theater Festival for Institutes and Colleges ,headed by Dr. Alaa Abdel Aziz Suleiman ,drama professor at the Higher Institute of Dramatic Arts. This edition celebrated the great theatrical director Galal El Sharkawy with the participation of 7 countries: Egypt, Jordan, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Oman and Lebanon.

94- On November 23, Under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Khalid bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Member of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council and Chairman of Abu Dhabi Executive Office, Abu Dhabi Art 2019 has come to a close, concluding a successful 11th edition of the leading art fair which welcomed scores of art lovers and industry insiders to its wide array of exhibits and programming on Saadiyat Island and in Al Ain. The international art fair witnessed a fruitful collaboration between Art D’Egypte and Karim Francis gallery to present some of the best works by a number of Egypt’s stellar contemporary artists.

95- Cairo International Film Festival kicked off on November 20. This edition housed a lot of surprises, seminars, panels and workshops executed by its creative filmmaker Mohamed Hefzy, acting artistic director Ahmed Shawky and its executive director Omar Kassem. This edition honoured renowned Egyptian filmmakers Sherif Arafa at the festival opening ceremony. The visionary and Legendary director, screenwriter, actor and animator, Terry Gilliam was honoured as well with a Faten Hamama Award. Gilliam received the accolade during the opening ceremony of the festival at the Cairo Opera House. “The Irishman” was the festival opening movie and Mexico was chosen to be the country in focus of this edition. Cairo International Film Festival becomes the first Arab festival and second African to sign the Gender Parity Pledge 5050×2020, joining this commitment launched during Cannes Film Festival in 2018. The festival is committed to promote gender equality and transparency, during its 42nd edition in November 2020.

Egyptian star Sherine Reda was a jury member in Best Arab Film Award, famed Egyptian actress Hanan Motawie was a jury member in Cinema of Tomorrow jury and Egyptian Hearthrob actress Hana Shiha was a jury member in Horizons of Arab Cinema Competition. The 41st edition of Cairo International Film Festival was dedicated to the festival artistic director the late great film critic Youssef Sherif Rizakallah. The festival prepared screened a documentary about Rizakallah entitled ‘’ Rizk el Cinema’’ to honour his long fruitful cinematic career that enriched Egyptian cinema.

DMC channels aired Cairo International Film Festival's 41st edition opening and closing. During the period from Nov. 21 to 26, the festival held the second edition of Cairo Industry Days, which provided professionals with opportunities for partnership and networking with the international film community, in addition to attending seminars, workshops and discussion panels.

Valuable prizes was awarded to winning film projects in the development and post-production stages, which are valued up at $200,000. Mexico was chosen to be the country in focus of this edition. CIFF granted famed American actor Billy Zane Special Tribute Award on Wednesday, November 26. The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) has awarded the festival the OSCAR qualifying film festival status.



The Festival concluded its events on Friday, November 29. Famed English actress Nathalie Emmanuel came on stage and gave Youssef Sherif Rizkallah award ( the audience award) to the Egyptian director Marianne Khoury on her documentary “Let’s Talk”. The 41st edition of Cairo International Film Festival honoured famed Lebanese director Nadine Labaki at its closing ceremony. CIFF head Mohamed Hefzy gave acclaimed Italian cinematographer Vittorio Storaro his honouring award in the closing ceremony as well.

96- The Egyptian Jewelleries Festival kicked off on Friday, November 29 in New Cairo. This was the first Egyptian jewelleries festival from 11 years ago, The matter that reflects the great enhancement in the Egyptian economic status. The Egyptian Jewelleries Festival witnessed the participation of a number of prominent fashion designers, jewelleries makers, artists and gold merchants.

97- Egyptian minister of culture Inas Abdel Dayem inaugurated the retrospective Exhibition of Eminent 3rd Generation Artist, Fatma Arargi entitled ''Man, Place, and Time,a seven Decades Journey'', on Sunday December 1. The exhibition displayed almost 51 paints of the Artist innovated in 70 years long. The works features her different body of works on: People & life, 1956 aggression, Luxor and Nubia, working class, 1967 war, post war and populist surrealism on Man & Universe and walls of time. This Exhibition is considered the first solo exhibition for the Artist in Thirty years.

98- On November 26, at an international celebration in Belgrade, Egyptian archaeologist Zahi Hawass was presented the Golden Medal of the Carrick Foundation, in the presence of 500 intellectuals and politicians in Serbia.
99-Egyptian minister of Culture Inas Abdel Dayem and head of Cairo International Film Festival Mohamed Hefzy inaugurated ''Cairo.. I Love You'' exhibition on November 23. This exhibition is tailor made to highlight Cairo's rich cinematic origins. Cairo which houses one of the oldest film industries in the world.

100- A play entitled "Fengan Qahwa” (A Cup of Coffee) directed by Khaled Galal is currently being prepared by the Theater Art House. The play brings back veteran theatrical actress Samiha Ayoub to the theatrical scene after years of hiatus. The play comes as a manifestation of joint Arab cooperation, where the writer of the play is Iraqi and the director is Egyptian. Veteran actor Abdel Raham Abou Zahra will co-star alongside Ayoub.

101- The Cinema Palace, headed by Egyptian actor Tamer Abdel Moneim honoured the great star Nabila Ebeid on Nov. 24, granting her a certificate of appreciation.

102- Minister of Culture Inas Abdel Dayem gave a speech on November 19 e at the Forum of Ministers of Culture. The forum comes within the framework of the 40th edition of the General Conference of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), based in Paris, France, and is attended by culture ministers and representatives of 120 countries. Abdel Dayem discussed the issue of culture in public squares, and the catalyst of social and cultural transformation.

103- On November 17, the successful historical series “Mamalek el-Nar” ( Kingdoms of Fire) was first screened on MBC Masr channel. The series interweaves the political aspects with the social ones in a fabulous artistic work, where Egyptian author Mohamed Soliman Abdel Malik combined historical accuracy and fiction in many of the screenplay’s events. The series told in 14 episodes the story of the Ottoman-Mamluk conflict and the occupation of Egypt and Sham (now Syria) by the Ottoman Sultan Selim I, in addition to the hanging of Tuman Bay, the last Mamluk sultan at Bab Zuweila. The series also illustrates the end of the Mamluk State because of betrayal. “Mamalek el-Nar” is directed by three directors: Syrian director Azzam Fouq el-Ada, the Spanish director Alejandro Toledo and the British director Peter Webber. A large number of Arab stars play roles in the series, including Khaled el-Nabawy in the role of Tuman Bay, the Syrian Rashid Assaf in the role of Qansuh al-Ghuri, Syrian actor Mahmoud Nasr in the role of Sultan Selim I, Syrian actor Abdel Moneim Amayri in the role of Bayazid, Syrian actress Kinda Hanna in the role of Tuman Bay’s lover, and Mona Wassef as a guest of honor.


104- The International Theater Without Fund Festival which was held in Alexandria honored renowned actor Ahmed Abdel Aziz in its closing ceremony on Nov. 22. The festival kicked off on Nov. 17 under the patronage of the Minister of Culture Inas Abdel Dayem took place at the theaters of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, Beyram el Tunisi Theater and El-Anfoushy Cultural Palace.

105- On November 17, Egyptian director Rami Emam posted a video on his Instagram account for his father, Egyptian megastar Adel Emam from behind the scenes of his upcoming Ramadan series ‘’Valentino’’. The video showed the veteran star reviewing some of the scenes from his role in the series while smoking a cigarette. This was the first video to Emam after his death rumors.‘’ Look who is beside me now’’ Rami captioned the video.


106- Veteran Egyptian singer Ali el Haggar received the 2019 Sultan Qaboos Award for Culture, Arts and Literature, to be the first Egyptian artist to receive this award. The Sultan Qaboos Award for Culture, Arts and Literature is an annual award that is granted to Omanis and Arabs.

107- Australian Cinematographers Society (ACS) announced Egyptian DOP Ahmad Al Morsy, as the winner of the Silver Award in the Feature Films category for his work in ''Turab el Mass'' (Diamond Dust) movie and the Gold Award in the Documentary Films category for ''Point of Convergence''.

108- The second Academy of Arts Youth Forum headed by Ashraf Zaki ran from Nov. 16-21. The forum was held under the slogan "Youth and the Dialogue of Creativity". All students of the academy participated in the forum's events. The main objective of the forum was the Integration of arts, where students gather to work on a single artwork that embodies their creativity and talents.

109- On November 12 famed Egyptian singer Ramy Gamal announced that he is suffering from vitiligo, after white spots appeared in areas of his body.The singer was not able to provide a cure for his skin disease. Gamal decided to share the matter with his fans, in order to help him take one of two decisions: either retire singing or be accepted by the public. Gamal’s fans supported him, revealing that they love him and accept him the way he are.

110- On the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the opening of the Khedive Opera, a grand ceremony was held at Cairo Opera House on Thursday, Nov. 14. During the ceremony, the Minister of Culture Inas Abdel Dayem will honored 12 personalities of the first-generation ballet dancers of the Egyptian Opera, among others.

111- On Nov. 12, Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Culture Hisham Azmy inaugurated the Egyptian Fine Art Exhibition. The inauguration was held at the headquarters of the Supreme Council of Culture at Cairo Opera House. About fifty artists from Egypt and all African countries participated in the exhibition.
112- Egypt participates with a documentary film produced by Saint Films
in the activities of the World Tolerance Summit in Dubai on Nov. 13-14.
113- A a press conference was held on Nov. 15. at El-Manasterly Palace to announce the inauguration of the International Center of Arts.

114- On November 7, Egypt participated as a guest of honor at the 21st edition of the Corsica International Music Festival in France. Minister of Culture Inas Abdel Dayem announced that such participation reflected Egypt's strong soft power and its cultural stance.

115- Egyptian Film ‘’Leil Khargy’’ (Exterior/ Night) competed in the official competition of Festival des Cinémas d'Afrique du Pays d'Apt –( FCAPA) in Paris which kicked off from November 8-13.

116- The famed international Egyptian mezzo-soprano Farrah el-Dibany received the Hassan Kamy award from Manial Palace Festival on November 9. El Dibany is the first ever to receive this award. She took it after giving a recital with Egyptian pianist Seif Mohie at the festival. El Dibany is the first Egyptian to win the “Prix Lyrique de l’AROP”, the best opera singer award from the Paris Opera House, according to Opera de Paris. This important annual international award is tailor made to uprising opera singers and is granted to one female and one male soprano.

117- On November 8, America Abroad Media (AAM) honored Egyptian superstar Yousra at its seventh annual Awards Dinner in Washington, D.C. AAM honors outstanding leaders whose work meets international standards and exemplifies the power of media to inform, educate and empower. AAM believes that Yousra’s collective work provides American audiences with a glimpse into the history of the Egyptian entertainment industry.

118- The French edition of Mohamed Abdel Nabi’s novel “Fe Ghorfat al- Ankabut” (La Chambre De L'Araignée) was awarded the Arab Literature Award presented by the Arab Institute in Paris.
119- On November 7, Egyptian actor Haitham Ahmed Zaki, 35, son of late iconic actor Ahmed Zaki (1949 – 2005) and late actress Hala Fouad (1958 - 1993), died in his apartment in Sheikh Zayed City, Giza, early on Thursday after suffering a sudden circulatory collapse.
120- Panorama European Film kicked off from November 6-12 at Zawya Cinema in downtown Cairo, Zamalek cinema and a number of film theaters in various Egyptian governorates. The panorama’s program includes the screening of more than 75 feature, documentary and short films from more than 30 countries.
121- The Egyptian Armed Forces Symphonic Band presented another distinguished performance during the sixth International Nanchang Military Music Festival. The band’s notable performance was aired on various Chinese media outlets.

122- On October 28, The Manial Palace Festival's second edition headed by prince Abbas Helmy kicked off under the auspices of the European Union and the ministries of antiquities and culture. The event was attended by the Spanish ambassador and a number of diplomats and public figures.

123- Mohamed Ramadan managed to break a new record by becoming the “most viewed” celebrity in the Middle East. Ramadan’s official YouTube channel surpassed 2 billion views, easily placing him on the throne of the most viewed artists of the Middle East.

124- Famed Egyptian star Sherine Abdel Wahab announced that she will play her first leading role in a romantic, musical and suspense movie. This movie is expected to be Sherine's strong comeback after 16 years of hiatus. Sherine participated in one movie along with the Egyptian mega star Ahmed Helmy titled “Mido Mashakel” (Mido always makes problems).

125- As part of the 38th edition of the Sharjah International Book Fair,Laila Eloui and Ahmed Mourad took part in a discussion session on Nov. 5 titled "Books and the Film Industry".

126- The management of Caftan Bladi Moroccan Festival's first edition held in Barcelona, Spain honored Egyptian star Somaya el-Khashab.
127-Tunisian-Egyptian star Hend Sabry won the Best actress Award at Carthage Film Festival for her in "Helm Noura" (Noura's Dream).

128- The 28th edition of the Arab Music festival kicked off at Cairo Opera House from November 1-12. This edition witnessed the participation of a notable group of stars such as the king Mohamed Mounir, Medhat Saleh, Omar Khairat, Assala, Mohamed el Sharnouby among others.

129-In October, American star Katy Perry visited number of Egyptian tourist attractions such as Siwa Oasis, White Dessert , Giza Pyramids among others, celebrating her 35th birthday.
130-Tazkarti Company headed by acclaimed marketing expert Montasser Al Nabarawy will organise a group of massive concerts to megastar Sherine Abdel Wahab. The first concert took place on December 20 at Al Manara Theater. Abdel Wahab presented in the concert a number of her successful songs. During this concert Abdel Wahab sang for the first time new songs from her upcoming album.Abdel Wahab preferred to make her comeback on stage with Tazkarti Company which managed to make a huge name in the Egyptian marketing sector.

131-Egyptian poet Fawzi Khedr won the first edition of Prince Abdullah Al-Faisal International Prize for Arabic Poetry in the theatrical poetry section for his play "Sheikh President Ibn Sina.

132-Sharjah International Book Fair's 39th edition displayed a rare book which features numerous archaeological sites in Egypt. It is priced at £ 300,000. The book was written by photographer Maxime du Camp, and is titled "Egypt, Nubia, Palestine and Syria." The book includes photographs collected during the years 1849, 1850 and 1851.
133- Nadine Abdel Ghaffar, Founder of Art D` Egypte Foundation stated during a press conference that the “Reimagined Narratives” exhibition launched on Oct. 17 comes with the 40th anniversary of UNESCO's selection of Al-Moez Street as one of the most important heritage sites in the world.

134-The famed Egyptian band Sharmoofers has dug its name in the global music scene by winning the British Boisdale Music Award as the Best Youth Band in the world in 2019.
135- At the conclusion of its 207th session, the Executive Board of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) adopted the resolution submitted by Egypt. The Egyptian resolution is entitled “Promote the Implementation of the 1970 Convention on the Means of Prohibiting and Preventing the Illicit Import, Export and Transfer of Ownership of Cultural Property.” It deals with the sales of antiquities in some international auction houses and their practices that contradict with the convention.
136- Netflix announced that Egyptian actor Ahmed Amin will play the lead role in Netflix's first Egyptian series "Paranormal". Set in Egypt in the 1960s, "Paranormal" sees Dr. Refaat Ismail plunged into a series of supernatural events as he attempts to unravel the mysteries behind each unique and unusual case. Egyptian actor and writer Amin will play the lead role of Refaat Ismail. The series, which went into production in November is directed by Egyptian director Amr Salama joined by the Emirati director Majid al-Ansari. The series is based on the late Ahmed Khaled Tawfik’s books that sold more than 15 million copies worldwide, "Paranormal" is Netflix's first foray into Egyptian drama." Paranormal" will be produced by Mohamed Hefzy, and Amr Salama.
