CAIRO - 12 June 2017: The Egyptian movie by Moataz Nasr, titled ‘the Mountain,’ was selected to represent Egypt at the 57th edition of the prestigious La Biennale Di Venezia International Art Exhibition, which runs between May 13 and November 26.
The Egyptian Ministry of Culture and the Egyptian High Supreme Council for Arts have selected the movie to participate in the exhibition.
A multimedia artist, Nasr is known for using painting, sculpture, photography, video and public art to create a platform that connects past, present and Egypt with the world, according to an article released by Art Talks.
winner of the Grand Prix at the 8th International Cairo Biennale, Nasr owns the independent platform for education and culture Darb 1718. Darb has been displaying various art programs since 2008.
As he won several awards and exhibited his work through the globe, Nasr discusses through his 12-minute film a story between locals and authorities by portraying Zein, a girl who leaves her village in Upper Egypt, to study. After she comes back she challenges the village’s local Sheikh and denies his authority.
Egypt won the Golden Lion award for Best Pavilion with artists Akram el-Magdoub, Hamdi Attia, and Medhat Shafik in 1995.
The exhibition is part of the Venice International Film Festival, which is organized by La Biennale di Venezia and aims to promote various aspects of international cinema such as art and entertainment, according to La Biennale Venice official website.
The Venice Biennale was founded in 1895 as one of the prominent cultural institutions worldwide, with over 370 thousand visitors attend the art exhibition.
