Arabic rights deal of Gabriel Márquez ratified in the Arab world

CAIRO-10 June 2017: Dar Al-Tanweer a Cairo-based publishing house announced on 1st of June major Arabic rights deal of famous author Gabriel Garcia Márquez, according to the publishing house’s official Facebook page.

The publisher’s director Sherif Rizk signed the six-year deal with the Teresa Pinto of the Agencia Literaria Balcells to release the first five translated books by the renowned author including One Hundred Years of Solitude, Love in the Time of Cholera, Autumn of the Patriarch and The General in his Labyrinth. Other books will be translated and released in the upcoming period.

Márquez’s books have been translated to Arabic previously in 1980 by Dar Al-Mada, however they were unauthorised translated editions, featuring poor copyright laws, according to a statement by The Bookseller.

Rizk highlighted the importance of this deal in accomplishing intellectual property rights and showing the influence of Márquez over Arabic readers, he said in the statement.
Dar Al-Tanweer Publishing House also plans to obtain the audio rights for the author’s novels in the upcoming period.
