Gaber Asfour, Mofeed Shehab, Ahmed Nawwar win Egypt's Nile Award

CAIRO – 24 June 2019: The Supreme Council of Culture named former Minister of Culture Gaber Asfour, painter Ahmed Nawwar, and former Minister of Higher Education Mofeed Shehab as winners of the Nile Award.

The value of the Nile Award is estimated at LE 500,000 ($24,000) and a gold medal for each winner, according to reports, and was granted to Asfour, Nawwar, and Shehab in the fields of literature, arts and social sciences, respectively.

The Nile Award has undergone several amendments such as raising its financial value and changing its name to become the Nile Award for Egyptian creators. It was originally named the Mubarak Award after former President Hosni Mubarak, but was changed after January 2011 revolution that ousted Mubarak.

The State Awards were launched in 1958 and were only cancelled in 1967, during the Six-Day War between Egypt and Israel, according to Egyptian state's Al-Ahram.
