CAIRO – 1 April 2019: An Egyptian archaeological mission uncovered a limestone sarcophagus containing two mummies during excavation works in the Quweisna quarries in Menoufiya governorate.

The sarcophagus has some gilded fragments. The sarcophagus’s contents have been sent to Kafr El-Sheikh storage gallery for restoration.
Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities Mostafa Waziri stressed that the newly discovered sarcophagus was found in a good condition. Three broken statuettes of three of the four sons of the God Horus were also uncovered.

Waziry further added that the sarcophagus is 2 metres tall and 60 cm wide.
Meanwhile, the two mummies inside the sarcophagus are in poor condition, and were found on top of each other.
The Egyptian archaeological mission uncovered as well a number of clay pots, amphorae, plates, amulets and scarabs carved in gold and faience, in addition to bronze coins dating back to the Ptolemaic era.
The amulets were transferred to the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir for display.
