CAIRO – 30 January 2019: The theatrical operetta "Seret el-Hob" (Love story) will be launched on Jan. 31 in the presence of Minister of Culture Inas Abdel Dayem.

The team is working to intensify the rehearsals in order to present a show that gains the approval of the observers.

The work comes upon Abdel Dayem's instructions to honor late legendary musician Baligh Hamdi.

The show also comes in recognition of Abdel Dayem’s constant efforts to select artistic works that boost the performance of state theaters under the leadership of Head of the production sector Khaled Galal.

The theatrical show will present compositions which were performed by late legendary artists such as Umm Kulthum, Abdel Halim Hafez, Mohamed Abdel Wahab, and Nakshabandi, among others.

The much anticipated play is the production of the performing group led by director Salah Labib.

Hamdi was an Egyptian composer who created hit songs for many prominent Arabic singers, especially during the 1960s and 1970s.

The legendary musician was born on Oct. 7, 1931 in Shubra district, Cairo. His father was a professor of physics at King Fuad I University (now Cairo University). He learned to play the violin at age 9, and the oud two or three years later.

He took music lessons with a variety of teachers throughout his childhood and teenage years. He became a professional musician in 1954 at age 22.

Immediately prior to that, he had been a law student, and he chose to not complete the studies for the law degree.

He started his music career as a singer. But very soon he turned to composing, and his compositions got good acceptance in the mid-1950s. In the late 1950s, the famous Umm Kulthum sang his composition "Hob Eih" and it was a hit.

Baligh Hamdi's early composition successes include "Why no" sung by Faydah Kamel, "Ma Tehbinish Bel Shakl Dah” (Don't love me like that) by Fayza Ahmed and "Tekhounoh” (How could you Betray my heart?) by Abdel Halim Hafez.

For the next two decades, he was one of the most popular, successful, and productive composers in the Arab world.
