CAIRO – 23 December 2018: Famed Syrian singer George Wassouf celebrates his 57th birthday on Dec. 23.
In a career spanning over almost four decades, the famed singer released more than 30 albums. With a significantly large audience in Lebanon, Syria and throughout the Arab world, Wassouf is one of the most important Arab singers; he sold over 60 million records worldwide.
The famed singer was born in Kafroun, Syria into a Christian family. The star holds the Lebanese passport besides his Syrian passport; he lived in Lebanon for most of his working life, but he started singing at the age of 10 in his hometown Kafroun.
Wassouf was discovered by his first manager and producer George Yazbeck at a wedding party he was performing at when he was 12. At the age of 16 he was called “Sultan el-Tarab” (Sultan of Music) by Lebanese journalist George Ibrahim el-Khoury, a magazine director, for his classic song "el-Hawa Sultan" (Love is a Sultan).
Wassouf became famous after appearing on the Lebanese show “Studio El-Fan” in 1980 when he was only 19 years old, and was introduced to the audience as the “Sultan of Music”.
Wassouf preferred not to shoot videos for his songs, saying "I don't feel I can act, I really can't. I only find myself when I'm on stage singing, but video clips force me to act."
