3 months of ‘Tanoura’ dance shows

CAIRO – 2 August 2018: The Museum of Islamic Art in co-operation with the General Organization of Cultural Palaces are organizing a series of “Tanoura Shows” (Folklore Dance) throughout the summer in an effort to engage with the community and promote intimacy with the homeland and its ancient civilization.

The entities are also aiming to remind the local society that museums play a major societal role in reminding people the significance of loving one’s homeland, through displaying ancient treasures that are symbols of the nation’s historical status, and by organizing numerous events that promote societal engagement.

The series of shows will be launched on Aug. 4, 2018.

Elham Salah el-Din, head of the museum sector in the Ministry of Antiquities, stated that this is the first time such a program is planned by the museum sector in the ministry, in which Saturday of every week is going to promise a new cultural Tanoura show for a time-span of three months.

General Manager of the Museum of Islamic Art Mamdouh Osman stated that the opening ceremony for the series of shows will take place at 7 p.m. on Aug. 4, as many folkloric and Tanoura shows will be performed.

The Tanoura Dance in Egypt is the practice of whirling a colorful skirt worn by the dancer.

The dance is derived from Turkish/Sufi origins and eventually blended in with Egyptian folklore and society.
