CAIRO – 22 April 2018: The second edition of Cairo Cinema Days Festival will kick off on Monday, April 23, at Zamalek cinema. The festival, which is organized by Zawya cinema, is tailored to shed light on the latest Arab cinema productions.
The festival’s opening ceremony will witness the screening of the Tunisian movie, "Ala Kaf Afreet" (Unstable). The story of the movie is inspired by real events, which highlight the problems of women in Tunisia by following the story of a young Tunisian student, Mariam, who is sexually harassed by three policemen while in a night club.
Despite Mariam's shock and pain, she insists on punishing the harassers and complains about the incident. "Ala Kaf Afreet" was directed by the Tunisian Kawsar bin Hania, and participated previously in the Cannes Film Festival in the Un Certain Regard section.
Misr International Films (MIF) established Zawya in March 2014 as the first art-house cinema in Egypt, located in Downtown's Cinema Odeon.
Zawya continuously displays a wide selection of films from different parts of the world, including short films, documentaries, feature films and experimental works. Zawya has a program that is divided between theatrical releases and special events.
Zawya’s program relies mainly on local independent films, supporting and promoting young Egyptian and Arab filmmakers' work. Zaywa aims to eventually grow into a series of cinema screens spread out across the country through having organized screenings in multiple venues outside of Cairo. Zawya also gives special attention to the concept of Education and Cinema, developing a strong educational program in collaboration with schools and universities in Egypt.
