CAIRO – 7 April 2018: Hollywood biographical blockbuster "Hidden Figures" (2017) will be getting a TV series at Nat Geo, proving to be their second scripted series as reported by Variety.
Directed by Theodore Melfi and adapted from the 2016 non-fiction book of the same name by Margot Lee Shetterly, "Hidden Figures" told the true story of the African-American women mathematicians working behind the scenes in NASA between 1930 and 1960, who were instrumental in helping to get the first astronauts on the moon but found themselves overshadowed by the men around them, especially in a time where women and people of color faced great prejudice, and being both came with its own set of challenges.
The film starred Octavia Spencer, Taraji P. Henson, Janelle Monáe, Kevin Costner and more. It proved to be a huge box office success, grossing in over $235 million worldwide and earning three Academy Award Nominations, including the Best Picture Oscar. The TV series, which is still very early in its development will feature the original producers for the film-onboard, though it is unknown if any members of the film's cast will reprise their roles.
Nat Geo is a cable network joint venture between National Geographic and 21st Century Fox. Its first scripted series was "Genius", which featured the lives of history's greatest minds. Its first season was based on the life of Albert Einstein who was portrayed by Geoffrey Rush, and will be releasing its second season on the life of Pablo Picasso, portrayed by Antonio Banderas. The series proved to be an immense success as well, bringing in 10 Emmy Award nominations.
The network also has a project by Leonardo DiCaprio in the works that's also based on the early days of NASA called "The Right Stuff" according to Variety. Other upcoming projects include "The Hot Zone", which details the origins of the deadly Ebola virus and even a scripted series based on the origins of National Geographic itself.
