Majida El Roumy’s life and career

CAIRO – 17 December 2017: In honor of the unique Lebanese singer Majida El Roumy's birthday on December 13, Egypt Today looks at her life and career.

Born in 1956, Majida El Roumy was born to a musical family; her father was the Lebanese composer Haliem El Roumy who collaborated with legendary Lebanese singer Fayrouz.

Influenced by Umm Kulthoum, Fayrouz and Laila Mourad, El Roumy was first showcased as a singer on “Studio Al Fan,” the TV show in 1974.

During the 1975 Lebanese Civil War, El Roumy released her first single, “Am Bahlamak Ya Helm Lebnan” (Lebanon, I am Dreaming of Your Dream). Shortly after, she appeared in her only film role, “Awdat Al Ibn Al Dal” (The Return of the Lost Son) (1976).

She released 14 albums and has performed in the most prestigious cultural venues in the Middle East.

Due to her classic music style and unique voice, she was referred to as “The Singer of the Cultured” and “Arab Music Angle.”

Her most celebrated songs are “Kalemat” (Words), “Enta Wi Ana” (You and Me), “Ebhath Aa’ny” (Search for Me) and “Eatazalt El Gharam” (I Gave up Love).
