Egyptian documentary “Um Ghayeb” to screen at Zawya on Demeber 7

CAIRO – 6 December 2017: On the International Human Rights Day, “Um Ghayeb” will screen at Zawya on December 7. The cocume On the International Human Rights Day, “Um Ghayeb” will screen at Zawya on December 7. The Egyptian documentary will be followed by a discussion with its director Nadine Salib and the women rights activist and researcher in gender and development, Nevine Abeid.

The event is organized by the embassy of the Netherlands in Egypt and the embassy of Switzerland in Egypt Released in 2014, the film revolves around a woman “Um Ghayeb” who is infertile; she expresses her emotions and hopes of delivering a child for 12 years. She has to live within a community that spreads lies about her. “Um Ghayeb” is a local name used to refer to infertile women.

Because of its humanitarian subject and good production, the film received positive feedback from critics and festivals. It won with FIPRESCI for Best Documentary film award from International Federation of Film Critics in 2014, and it participated in different international festivals, such as Dubai International Film Festival, Carthage International Film Festival, Thessaloniki Documentary Festival, and Sheffield International Documentary Festival.
