CAIRO – 19 October 2017: Sunday Cinema will be dedicating the month of November for a retrospective of Latvian film director Laila Pakalnina, who is one of the country’s most prolific filmmakers. The month is hosted in association with the Latvian Embassy in Cairo.

Born on June 4, 1962, Pakalnina’s body of work covers various short films and documentaries, typically with absurd and comedic premises. She has produced over 26 documentaries, six short films, and five fictional features.

Starting on Sunday, November 12, the retrospective will begin with a lecture and presentation of four films; “Water” (2006), “Fire” (2007), “Rasma” (2015) and “The Waterfall” (2016). Sunday, November 19, will feature “Pizzas” (2012), the longest film shown.

A strange comedy, “Pizzas” follows a fictional news report about two teenage fast food workers who rob their employer’s safe.

The retrospective concludes on Sunday, November 26 with “A Short Film about Life” (2014), “Hotel and a Ball” (2014) and “The Chimney” (2013.)
