Mozart’s ‘Die Zauberflote’ at Cairo Opera House on Saturday

CAIRO – 11 October 2017: A live performance of Mozart’s “Die Zauberflote” (The Magic Flute) at the Metropolitan Opera in New York will be shown in high definition (HD) at the Cairo Opera House come this Saturday, October 14.

“The Magic Flute” is a two part opera that tells a deceptively simple story, and was first performed on September 30, 1791; appealling to as wide an audience as possible. This would prove to be Mozart’s final opera; he died a few months later in December.

Using a simplistic surface of a fairytale featuring a damsel in distress; the opera reveals a deeper meaning. The opera denotes the search for wisdom and enlightenment, with symbols drawn from Mozart’s time as a freemason; an ancient order dedicated to certain mystical and moral ideals.

“The Magic Flute” is performed using a song-play format, where separate musical scenes are connected by moments of dialogue and stage performances.

This performance of the classic opera is conducted by Emeritus James Levine, with stage production by Julie Taymor, whose costume design perfectly captures both the down-to-earth and mystical elements of the opera.
