CAIRO – 10 October 2017: In correspondence with the national Spanish holidays, Cairo Opera House is hosting Ballet Flamenco De Madrid, which will be performing the famous “Carmina Burana” show, displayed five times from October 12 to October 17.
Director of the ballet troupe and artistic producer Maher Zekry, who lived 42 years in Spain, has stated that the performance will feature 40 flamenco performers and that the first part of the performance is inspired by the famous musical “Carmina Burana” by Carl Orff.
“Carmina Burana” thematically revolves around life struggles, good and evil, love and hate, happiness and pain. The story also features Vortona, the goddess of fate who is responsible for running the scene between happiness and grief, and vice versa, through flamenco movements.
The performance is colored with an array of creative flamenco movements, tango and rumba music, alongside Arab Flamenco dancing that will be conducted by the Mont Cairo Music troupe led by maestro Sherif Nour.
The flamenco dance will also be performed on a unique collection of Egyptian classics, including “Tayer ya Hawa” (Flying Love) and “Habeby Ya Nour El Ein” (My lover, the Apple of My Eye).
Ballet Flamenco De Madrid was established in 2001 as an independent troupe and later turned into an official foundation in 2009 aiming to preserve the classic Spanish artistic heritage, according to a press release by the Cairo Opera House.
Comprised of over 200 performers and 50 musicians, the troupe has performed in several countries and participated in various festivals. They were also awarded and honored by the Chinese Ministry of Culture in 2001 and received a certification of appreciation from the Egyptian Culture Ministry in 2005.
Ballet season recently kicked off with the Italian ballet “Le Corsaire” displayed at the Cairo Opera House from September 29 to October 2. This year’s ballet season will be featuring more performances in the upcoming period and throughout 2018 including, “The Nutcracker,” “Swan Lake,” and “La Bayadere;” a ballet performance that will be introduced in the repertoire for the first time.
