Located in southern Mexico, the town of Tultepec hosts its National Pyrotechnics Festival every year, as the town is one of Mexico’s largest producers of fireworks. Rather than focusing on facts or reading out history notes, Jakovleski takes viewers right into the action, allowing them to experience the festival as if they were there themselves.
Characters are few and far between, as this is a story about a town and its unique relationship to fireworks, along with celebrating the beauty of celebration. Amongst some of the spectacles, the film features include giant paper-mache bulls and a massive flaming castle.
“Brimestone & Glory” premiered in the U.S. on March 2, 2017, and won the Golden Gate Award for Best Documentary Feature at the San Francisco International Film Festival.
