CAIRO – 5 September 2017: Monday, September 4 was the birthday of superstar singer Beyonce Knowles, ‘Queen B’. To celebrate, Egypt Today takes a look at 10 of the music queen’s greatest songs;
1-“Irreplaceable” (2006)
The song that gave the world “To the left, to the left,” Beyonce’s break-up anthem helped millions deal with the pain of heartbreak by doing what she does best, empowering women and girls alike by constantly reminding them of their worth, separate from any replaceable date. “Irreplaceable” was nominated for MTV’s Video of the Year award and a Grammy Award nomination for Record of the Year.
2-“ If I Were A Boy” (2008)
Sad yet powerful, “If I Were A Boy” was a profound thought experiment on a heartbroken woman trying to rationalize and justify the hurtful actions of her lovers, while ensuring that she could make a better man, knowing as a woman how it feels to have been hurt. It was a #1 song on the Top 10 charts in 2008.
3-“Run the World (Girls)” (2011)
Beyonce’s magnificent tribute to women of all shapes, sizes and colors was a massive hit, topping the charts and earning the #29 spot on Billboard’s Top 100 Chart. As if the song wasn’t enough, the stylish dancing won praise and the song received the MTV Video Music Award for Best Choreography thanks to its video. Powerful messages packaged with amazing style define Beyonce, and it’s no clearer than in this song.
4-“Crazy in Love” (2003)
Featuring Jay Z, this is the song that truly established Beyonce as a wild talent all on her own, separate from her band Destiny’s Child. Every second of the song is a memorable trip that captures all that’s perfect about Queen B and cemented to the public that yes, this is a force to be reckoned with, topping pop charts for weeks on end.
5- “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)” (2008)
Another song to empower ladies; Beyonce this time praises women who aren’t in a relationship, reminding them that they don’t need a lover to shine as bright as they want. This song won MTV’s Video Music Award for Video of the Year and three Grammy Awards, topping the charts.
6-“Beautiful Liar” (2007)
Starring alongside fellow diva Shakira, this song brought out the absolute best in both singers, musically and visually as they danced in sync, producing a magical video filled with raw energy. It was #3 at the Billboard Hot 100 chart and awarded the MTV Video Music Award for Most Earth-Shattering Collaboration.
7-“Halo” (2008)
Beyonce performed this song in 2010 to honor the victims of the Haiti Earthquake. This powerful song about opening up, breaking down barriers and letting the light in was the message of hope many needed, and it was #5 on Billboard’s Hot 100 and received the Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.
8-“***Flawless” (2013)
Not ashamed to admit it, Beyonce is well aware of her strength, flaunting her pride and reminding everyone that she “woke up like this,” flawless. Featuring Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, this song became another feminist anthem like so many of Beyonce’s other hits, rising to the top of the charts and everyone’s radio.
9-“Best Thing I Never Had” (2011)

Providing hope for women after a breakup, Beyonce’s 2011 smash hit helped remind them that there’s life after heartache and that something better is always on the horizon. It was the #1 U.S. Dance Club Song.
10- “Sweet Dreams” (2008)
Last but not least, Beyonce’s “Sweet Dreams” is a look at the dual nature of love; how it could be the most wonderful dream in the world to an inescapable nightmare. Beyonce’s intimate and powerful knowledge of relationships has helped make her music rise above the chaff and truly root herself as the Queen of Pop.
