CAIRO – 5 August 2017: An exhibition called ‘Christians of the East. Two Thousand Years of History’ will be running between September 26 and January 14 at MUba Eugène Leroy, Museum of Fine Arts of Tourcoing.
The exhibition sheds light on the role of the Middle East in shaping religion, culture, social life, and politics, according to a released statement by Institut Du Monde Arabe.
According to the exhibition brochure in French Christianity was born in Jerusalem,settled in Egypt and present day , Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, and Iraq.
Christian heritage contributed in forming social and political forms of several Arab communities throughout history.
The exhibition displays this Christian heritage as some of i for the first time in Europe.
Visitors throughout the tour will be enlightened by the establishment of Christianity, a state religion, Muslim founders, expansion of Catholic and Protestant missionaries, role of Christianity in the ArabRenaissance, and religious information about other historical eras, according to the statement.
Visitors will also get acquainted of the diverse factions of Christianity displayed throughout the tour such as Coptic, Greek, Assyro-Chaldean, Syriac, Armenian, Maronite, Latin, Protestant Churches, Orthodox and Catholic which are mainly found in Middle Eastern Christianity.
The displayed masterpieces include the Gospels of Rabula, a Syriac manuscript from the sixth century and the first known Christian drawings of the Doura-Europos in Syria, dating to the third century.
The exhibition will also feature maps, archives, models, and documentaries that will showcase these Christian heritages, giving visitors a full perspective of Eastern Christians culturally, politically, and intellectually.
