CAIRO – 26 July 2017: The Award-winning Egyptian film Akhdar Yabes, Withered Green, by director Mohammed Hamed, will partake in the official competition of the Xining International Film Festival at Xining city, Shanghai.
The film will be shown twice during the festival and a seminar will be held following each show where the director Hamed will meet the audience.
This is the second time for the film Akhdar Yabes to participate in an Asian film festival, as the first time was in Singapore International Film Festival. The film won the Golden Award of the Mexico International Film Festival.
Withered Green is the story of young Iman, a conservative religious person, who takes people's opinions of her into account and shows uptight restriction to all the withering social traditions. However, a shocking discovery prompts her to do away with all these withered traditions that she once clung to.
After the death of her parents, the traditional and conservative young woman, Iman, has to take care of her younger sister, Noha. When her sibling is faced with a marriage proposal, Iman has to ask her uncles to meet the groom and his family, as customs in Arab societies requires the presence of a man from the bride’s side for the marriage agreement. But Iman decides to disregard the tradition.
Meanwhile, the director Mohammed Hammad also won the Best Director Award at the Dubai International Film Festival for the same film, while the film heroin Heba Ali won the Critics Award as best actress during the last session of Cannes Film Festival.
In June 2017, the film Akhdar Yabes participated in the official competition of the Cyprus International Film Festival, bringing the number of the international festivals in which the film participating, to 35 international festivals so far.
The film was premiered during Locarno Film Festival.
After receiving the gold medal at the Mexico International Film Festival, Mohammed Hammad also won the Best Director award at the Dubai International Film Festival for the same film, and won the award of the film Hiba on the Critics Award as Best Actress, which was awarded during the last session of Cannes Film Festival.
