Yasser Faiz’s drama short BOUGAINVILLEA is set to hold its world premiere at the prestigious MENA Film Festival in Canada (January 25th - 30th), where it will be screening as part of the Revolutions Program at 6:45 pm on January 29th at the VIFF Center Cinema.

Set against the backdrop of Sudan's 2018 revolution, BOUGAINVILLEA tells the poignant story of six women imprisoned during the revolution. The film explores themes of resistance, resilience, and the emotional toll of captivity, providing a raw and powerful look at the hardships faced by Sudanese women during this critical time in the country’s history.

With its unflinching portrayal of political struggle, the film sheds light on the resilience of these women and their unwavering commitment to freedom, even in the face of oppression.

Discussing the story behind BOUGAINVILLEA and the film’s emphasis on authenticity, Faiz said “The extraordinary role of Sudanese women in public life and political activism, which reached its peak during the December 2018 revolution, inspired me to create this film.”

“To capture the reality of political imprisonment, I conducted interviews with former detainees to shed light on their emotional and harrowing experiences. BOUGAINVILLEA delves into a sensitive topic in a country where women face numerous societal restrictions. Through the intense and isolated space of imprisonment, the film portrays their struggles, fears, and dreams, ultimately celebrating their inner strength and unwavering resistance. It is a tribute to their resilience, and I hope it inspires and empowers audiences worldwide by sharing the untold stories of these courageous women.”

BOUGAINVILLEA  was written and directed by Yasser Faiz; produced by Indeep Vision; stars Linda Omar, Islam Mubarak, Sohanda Abu Bakr, and Shams Mubarak; lensed, edited, and produced by Ibrahim Ahmed; and scored by Amjad Abdullah.
