CAIRO – 17 November 2024: A video circulating on social media has sparked concern, showing workers seemingly "demolishing" one of the Great Pyramids (Khufu) in the Giza Pyramids area.
The Ministry of Antiquities and Tourism clarified that the video actually depicts workers removing modern, non-archaeological materials—specifically mortar—deposited decades ago to cover the electrical network used for lighting the pyramid.
The Supreme Council of Antiquities is currently overseeing the removal of these materials as part of a project to upgrade the Great Pyramid’s lighting system. This process is being conducted without impacting the pyramid’s structure or any of its original stones.
The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding Egypt’s archaeological and cultural heritage, urging social media users to verify the accuracy of information before sharing, in order to prevent the spread of misinformation that could cause public concern.
Ashraf Mohie, Director General of Antiquities for the Giza and Pyramids Archaeological Area, also explained that the electricity network for lighting the Great Pyramid is being replaced with new electrical cables. The workers have placed a new layer of cement mortar as part of this upgrade.
Mohie emphasized that the pyramid’s body and original stones have not been disturbed in any way.
