Spanish archaeologists discovered Ptolemaic & Roman tombs, mummies, coffins, golden masks, terracotta statues in Al Bahnasa

Spanish archaeologists succeeded in discovering Ptolemaic and Roman tombs, mummies, coffins, golden masks and terracotta statues in the Al Bahnasa historic city in Minya governorate.

The archaeological team uncovered a number of rock-cut tombs dating back to both the Ptolemaic and Roman periods, highlighting unique burial practices and artistic expressions that were present in these periods.

Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities  Mostafa Waziri explained that the new discovery highlights the rich history of the region.

He pointed out that one of the most important newly uncovered artifacts is the terracotta statues depicting deity Isis-Aphrodite with foliage crowns.
 
 
 
“This discovery proves that Al Bahnasa historic city still houses a number of secrets waiting to be unveiled,” Waziri explained.
 
The excavation team also discovered Roman-era mummies, some of which were with gilded and coloured funeral masks. Two mummies were discovered with golden tongues inside their mouths a unique feature known from the Roman era in Al Bahnasa, to symbolize the preservation of the deceased.
 
 
 
The archeological team uncovered parts of a ruined structure that contains catchy  drawings depicting intricate details of plants, grapevines, and number of animals, giving glimpses about the daily life and cultural significance of Al Bahnasa during ancient times.
