The Coptic Orthodox Cathedral of Archangel Mikhail in Assiut installed a statue of the Virgin Mary on a 15-metre-high pedestal in Dronka town.

The 10-tonne 9-metre-tall statue was installed in Assiut in celebration of the yearly Fast of the Virgin Mary.

The Virgin Mary statue which was sculpted out of foam was made by Egyptian sculptor Gerges al-Gawli.

The reason behind the formation of this huge statue is that Bishop Anba Yu’annis of the Coptic Orthodox Cathedral of Archangel Michael decided that there should be a statue of similar stature of Harissa statue in Lebanon.
