CAIRO - 10 April 2023: The Prophet Daniel Street is one of the most important historical streets in the Mediterranean city of Alexandria, and serces as a complex for places of worship for the three religions: Islam, Christianity and Judaism.
The Prophet Daniel Street (or as known in Arabic: Nabi Daniel St.) is the oldest street in Alexandria, with cultural and heritage value, as it includes a number of cultural centers, and the largest used book market in the governorate. It is named after the Mosque Nabil Daniel located in the street.
This street has suffered from years of randomness and severe traffic congestion due to the spread of street vendors and the encroachments of booksellers, as the street is famous for the large number of street vendors in it, not only for used books, but for all consumer products such as clothes, household appliances, plastic products, etc.
Developing the historic street
Recently, the Alexandria Governorate announced the start of developing the “Nabi Daniel” Street, the oldest street in Alexandria, upgrading the 730-meter-long Al-Nabi Daniel Street at an estimated cost of 103 million pounds.
The street contains 15 heritage buildings that will be restored and painted in a uniform color.
The street also hosts: St. Mark's Church, which is the oldest church in Africa, the Eliyahu Synagogue, which is the oldest Jewish temple built in Alexandria, and the Prophet Daniel Mosque, creating a unique situation of gathering religions around the world.
The governor explained that there is a plan and a strategic vision to develop and raise the efficiency of all archaeological and heritage sites in Alexandria to preserve them.
