CAIRO – 14 December 2022: Egypt is an ancient country that experienced many events and fought great wars throughout its history. This history is recorded in books and antiquities and documented on the walls of temples and in museums, including the National Military Museum located in the Citadel of Salah El-Din El-Ayyubi.
The idea of establishing a national military museum is old, but it entered into force in 1937. The National Military Museum was first established in the old Ministry of Defense building on Falaki Street, then moved to a temporary building in Garden City in 1938 until it was moved again at the Haram Palace in Salah El-Din Citadel in November 1949. The palace was renovated and re-opened in 1982.
The museum was developed several times after that until 2011 when a project to develop and restore it launched to make it a new addition to the many visiting areas of Salah El-Din Citadel.
The museum reviews, through its holdings, the history of the Egyptian military through the ages from the beginning of the Pharaonic era until the emergence of the Egyptian military during the era of the family of Mohammad Ali Pasha, which witnessed the renaissance of the Egyptian army, in addition to illustrating the July revolution, the October victories, and the June 30 revolution.
The Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities also provided the museum with a new set of holdings, including more than a hundred artifacts from various archaeological sites and museum stores from Saqqara, Luxor, Alexandria, the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir, the Suez National Museum, and others.
