The management of Luxor African Film Festival (LAFF) announced that its 12th edition will take place from February 4-11.
LAFF has revealed the edition’s poster designed by the rising artist Mahmoud Ismail Abou Al-Enin.
The artist explained that his design reflects LAFF through three elements: Cinema, Luxor and Africa.
“Luxor is the city of the sun and the capital of the Pharaonic civilization, and this is reflected in the poster through the sun and the Pharaonic obedience, which is the same as the sun of Africa”, said Abou Al-Enin.
Abou Al-Enin added that the flying balloon in the design also carries the largest side of the symbolic signals, as they are among the most famous landmarks of Luxor.
“It has a reference to the famous cinematic angle (Birdseye), which reveals about African cinema and icons" Abou El-Enin added.
The poster also adds the slogan of this edition: Cinema is the Eternity of Time through a sailing boat that have set the path towards the sun with a journey to the sunset near Luxor’s West Shore, which represents eternity in the other life through its temples and inscriptions where cinema is now considered the tool of contemporary eternity.
Director Azza Elhosseiny, the founder and director of the festival, stated that the focus is always in the poster to promote the touristic and promotional side of the ancient city, which is part of the festival's role in addition to the artistic, cinematic and African side.
She also added that LAFF’s role is also supporting relations with sister African countries, which is reflected in the consolidation of economic aspects and joint production as basic targets coming from the choice of Luxor as a city that embraces the festival, a city considered to be the Egypt’s gate to Africa.
Scriptwriter Sayed Fouad, founder and president of the festival, also explained that the slogan of this edition is (Cinema The Quest of Immortality) sheds light on one of the important roles of cinema, which is eternity. The cinema has played many roles in human life since its appearance more than 126 years ago in terms of entertainment, awareness and more.
He also added that LAFF tried, since its establishment 13 years ago, to spread the importance of cinema in Africa and the world. Finally, Fouad explained that while Ancient Egyptians have immortalized their presence through their visual arts on the walls of temples, cemeteries and obelisks, filmmakers have immortalized time, place. humankind, fashion, music, languages and dialects through cinema.
LAFF is organized by Independent Shabab Foundation with the support of the Egyptian ministries (Culture - Tourism and Antiquities - Youth and Sports - Foreign Affairs), in cooperation with Luxor Governorate, Film Syndication, and with the sponsorship of Orascom - Ceramica Cleopatra - National Bank of Egypt - Afreximbank.
