CAIRO – 21 November 2022: A British couple found a number of rare coins under the floorboards in their home, as they found a glass the size of a soda can that was shockingly full of coins dating between 1610 and 1727.

When they discovered the treasure trove, the couple contacted London auction house Spink & Son, who traveled to their home to check out the coins and trace their lineage back to a family nearly 300 years ago.

The gold coins belonged to the Fernley-Maister family, a wealthy family from Hull, England, who were well-known merchants, according to the New York Post website. They also discovered that later generations of the Fernley-Maister family served as members of Parliament and politicians in the early 18th century.

The coins were initially valued at $231,390, but that number turned out to be too little. It recently sold at auction for $852,380, according to NBC New York.

"The sale was unique in many ways," said auctioneer Gregory Edmund, referring to the coins' story, how they were discovered and the rare opportunity to buy them at auction.
