CAIRO – 31 October 2022: Upon the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb, Howard Carter found a couple of hand-fans, which would have been very practical to use in the hot Egyptian summer.
The title “Fan Bearer of the king” was a very important title in ancient Egypt held by influential officials.
This fan originally held ostrich feathers attached to it. The palm of the fan is decorated with the birth and throne titles of the king.
The two vultures on either side represent the protective goddesses of Upper and Lower Egypt.
