CAIRO – 30 October 2022: An ornate Fatimid-Egyptian pottery vase, dating back to the 10th and 11th centuries, was sold at Sotheby's auction in London for £693,000.
According to the auction house, the oval vase was put up for auction at an estimated price between £400,000 and £600,000.
The vase is described as having an oval shape on a flat base, with a raised shoulder strap and a short, inclined neck with an upturned rim, adorned around the body with an intricate geometric trellis of braided cable that forms four oval cartouches that have a stippled Kufic script with lines scratched in glitter, and a wide band of Kufic script with flowered ascenders in a frieze around the lower part of the body. The shoulder has a ribbon and there is a braided band around the neck. The interior is glazed.
