CAIRO – 3 October 2022: Picasso Art Gallery in Zamalek is holding two exhibitions for pioneering artist George Bahgoury and plastic artist Mahmoud Marey on October 5.
The exhibition will be held from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and runs until October 20.
George Bahgoury, nicknamed "the grandfather of the Egyptian caricature," was born in Luxor in 1932. He is a contemporary French-Egyptian artist with exceptional mastery in drawing, sculpture and caricature among many other artistic mediums.
Bahgoury made his way to the top of the Egyptian art scene with steady steps that began by studying at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Zamalek. He then moved on to study fine arts at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris.
Before making a name for himself as a world-renowned Cubist painter, George Bahgoury began his career as a cartoonist for the 1950 Egyptian publication Rose El-Youssef.
On the other hand, Mahmoud Marey's exhibition will be titled “White Turbans”. "I was fortunate when I wore the turban from 1996 to 2001 by virtue of my studies at Al-Azhar Institute, as the turban is the official dress of Al-Azhar students in some governorates of Upper Egypt. I was always filled with enthusiasm to wear the turban, and it had an important impact on my personality at that time. The turban, in its different shapes and colors, is an important symbol in the cultures of peoples and a symbol that distinguishes religious men in their differences. The turban is an art that the Muslim carries on his head wherever he goes,” said Marey when speaking about his artworks.
