CAIRO – 14 August 2022: The Sohag National Museum is one of the largest regional museums in Egypt and the cultural facade of Sohag Governorate. With its distinguished location, it houses the archaeological artifacts extracted from its land.
The idea of establishing the museum began in 1993, to display the archaeological artifacts discovered in Sohag Governorate. The construction of the museum stalled and stopped for several years until work began to resume again in 2016. It was officially launched in 2018 by Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi.
The Sohag National Museum is located on the eastern bank of the Nile in the suburb of Madinat Nasser, Sohag Governorate. The design of the museum takes the form of the Temple of King Seti I in Abydos. It consists of a basement and two floors, and includes a group of artifacts that shed light on several topics, including kings and important personalities, family and social status, ancient Egyptian cuisine, crafts and industries, textiles, heritage, and the Haj Pilgrimage through the ages.

Among the most prominent artifacts on display is a pink granite statue of King Ramses II from the era of the Nineteenth Dynasty, part of the tomb of the ruler of Abydos and the supreme commander of the army from the era of the Sixth Dynasty, the key to the Monastery of Anba Shenouda in Sohag (the White Monastery) and a gold Qur’an from the Ottoman era.
