CAIRO – 8 August 2022: In Germany, many have heard a tale told to children about Pied Piper who freed a town from mice by driving them away with his music.
When he was not paid, he went back and led the children of his town to an unknown destination. They have not been seen again.
Few people realize that this "fairy tale" is actually a disturbing true story that happened more than 700 years ago.
The story of Pied Piper takes place in the year 1284 AD in the town of Hamelin in Lower Saxony, Germany. The oldest known record of this story is from the city of Hamelin itself. The incident is depicted in a stained-glass window created for Hamelin Church, which dates back to around 1300 AD. The true records of the story were destroyed in 1660, according to the ancient-origins website.
Today, the supposed street where the children were last seen is called Bungelosenstrasse (a street without drums), as no one is allowed to play or dance there.
The mystery of what really happened to the children of Hamelin has yet to be solved.
