CAIRO – 19 July 2022: Former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill described the city of El-Alamein as a distinguished city boasting the best weather in the world.
El-Alamein always had a bright sun, a clear sky, and silky sand, hence becoming a distinguished tourist destination for Egyptians and foreigners alike.
The temperature in El-Alamein in summer ranges between 22 and 30 degrees Celsius, while in winter it reaches 17 degrees Celsius.
El-Alamein is located northern Matrouh Governorate of Egypt. Located on the Arab's Gulf, Mediterranean Sea, it lies 106 kilometers west of Alexandria and 240 kilometers northwest of Cairo.
El-Alamein houses a war museum with artifacts from North African battles. Visitors of this gem of a city can also see the Italian and German military cemeteries on Tel el-Eisa Hill located on its outskirts. The German cemetery is an ossuary, built in the style of a medieval fortress.
Moreover, the Italian cemetery is a mausoleum containing some 5,200 tombs. Numerous tombs bear the deceased soldier's name, while others are simply marked “Unknown”. El-Alamein also houses a Greek cemetery.
Furthermore, El-Alamein houses a Commonwealth war cemetery, built and maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. It contains graves of soldiers from various countries who fought on the Allied side.
Two important World War II battles were fought in El-Alamein. The First Battle of El-Alamein broke out on July 1, 1942 and ended on July 27, 1942. The Second Battle of El-Alamein erupted on October 23, 1942 and ended on November 4, 1942.
