NMEC, Al-Qalam Foundation hold 'Discover Sirma Art' event in line with Hajj season

CAIRO – 4 July 2022: In conjunction with the start of the Hajj season, the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization in Fustat, in cooperation with the Al-Qalam Foundation for the Art of Arabic Calligraphy, held an event entitled "Discover Sirma Art".

 

 

 

 

The event included an art exhibition of pieces and artifacts made using Sirma, which is the art of embroidery with golden threads that was used to decorate the covering of the holy Kaaba. It was also used to decorate the clothes of kings and princes in different historical eras. The event also included an interactive live workshop on the craft of Sirma art.

Additionally, the event presented a live heritage workshop on the art of Hajj graffiti, which is the art of painting on the walls and facades of houses in rural and Upper Egypt to indicate that the house owners left to perform the Hajj, as a kind of a popular celebration.

 

 

 

 

At the end of the event, all participating artists received certificates of appreciation from the museum’s management.

 

 

 

 

CEO of the Museum Authority Ahmed Ghoneim explained that such events aim to emphasize the role and mission of museums as educational, enlightenment and community institutions. According to Ghoneim, these events revive heritage and protect fine art from extinction.
