CAIRO – 13 June 2022: An ancient lost city that was swallowed whole by the sea centuries ago has been found after decades of searching.
Ravenser Odd was a medieval port city located in East Yorkshire, a major county in the North East of England. The city was a port and a major place for anchoring fishing boats and cargo ships. The 13th-century city had more than 100 homes and a collection of docks and warehouses along the seashore. It became a prosperous port city by 1299.
Unfortunately, the city was swept into the sea and remained under water for centuries. Many refer to the city as Britain's lost Atlantis because no one has been able to see it for more than 650 years. Scientists have been trying to locate the city for years, but recent searches near the shore revealed rocks and stonework just a few meters below the water's surface, the Mirror reports.
Experts said that the city remained undiscovered for centuries as previous scholars searched for it in all the wrong places. It was generally thought that Ravenser Odd was more likely to be found about a mile off the Yorkshire coast. But when another scientist took his search near the shore, he found rocks and stonework. Experts say the discovery could be as legendary as the discovery of Pompeii, an Italian city
"It's fascinating, exciting and exhilarating. The exact location of this medieval city has never been determined. We now have the tools and technology to go out there and locate it once and for all,” said Professor Dan Parsons, a geologist at the University of Hull.
The team led by Parsons now hopes to find the city's imprint. Once they find the foundations, harbors, and seawalls, they will create a 3D map.
“Finding the city after so long would be the fulfillment of life’s mission,” said Phil Mattison, who has devoted 25 years of his life to searching for the city.
