CAIRO – 19 May 2022: On May 24, Bonhams Auctioneers in London, will hold an auction entitled "Modern & Contemporary Middle Eastern Art, Including on the Banks of the Nile”.
The auction includes many paintings of the fine art pioneers, as well as others by contemporary artists. Among the paintings on display is a painting by Ramses Younan titled "Abstract Composition". The painting is expected to fetch between £8,000 and £12,000.
Ramses Younan (1913-1966), is considered one of the founders of the Art and Freedom group, one of the pioneers of renewal in Egyptian art, and an advocate of liberation in thought and art.
He opened the doors of symbolism and abstraction in Egypt. He has made efforts to transfer contemporary Western culture to the Arab world through translation and drawing. His life was a series of protests in the face of rigid knots. He is one of the providers of the avant-garde Western culture, as he translated “Caligula” by Albert Camus and “A Season in Hell” by Arthur Rimbaud.
Younan did so much as an art critic and analyst and promoted Modern European Art. His role in translation and criticism was the most influential in society.
Sobhi al-Sharouni issued a book on Younan titled “The Rebellious Intellectual Ramses Younan”, in a series of studies focusing on the criticism of fine arts, published by the General Egyptian Book Organization.
