CAIRO – 15 May 2022: Family issues have been the subject of attention at the United Nations during the 1980s.

The International Day of Families is celebrated annually on May 15. This day was proclaimed by the United Nations by General Assembly Resolution (A/RES/47/237) of 1993.

This day is intended to reflect the importance that the international community attaches to families. The International Day of Families provides an opportunity to promote awareness of issues related to families and to increase knowledge of the social, economic and demographic processes affecting them.

On September 25, 2015, the 193 member states of the United Nations unanimously adopted the Sustainable Development Goals, a set of 17 goals that aim to end poverty, discrimination, abuse and causes of death, address environmental destruction, and usher in an era of development for all. Family policies and programs are vital to achieving many of these goals.
