1939 - Madrid surrenders to a rebel army led by General Francisco Franco.

 

 

 

 

1941 - Algerian activist Messali El-Hadj is sentenced to 16 years in prison and 20 years in exile after imprisonment by a French military court.

 

 

 

 

1970 - British forces are expelled and their bases in Libya are evacuated for the first time since they entered the country after World War II.
