CAIRO – 22 March 2022: The Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities inaugurated part of the Babylon Fortress building in the Religions Complex in Old Cairo for visits, after the completion of the first phase of its restoration.
Assistant Minister of Tourism and Antiquities for Projects and General Supervisor of the Historic Cairo Project Hisham Samir, explained that the part of the fortress, located on the side of the Coptic Museum gate, was opened after the completion of the first phase of the restoration project, which included cleaning all the external and internal facades of the fort; and removing all dirt, dust and stains on the stones, in addition to the development of the lighting system in all parts of the circular fort, which contributes to highlighting the architectural beauty of the fort.
Also, the frames were filled in to clarify the shape of the existing stones, and the fort’s windows were restored.
Restoration work was carried out with the participation of the Institute of Archaeological Crafts of the Supreme Council of Antiquities.
Samir indicated that the second phase of the restoration work is underway. It includes the restoration of the southern part of the fortress located below the Hanging Church called Amro Gate.
