1488 - Portuguese explorer Bartholomew Diaz lands in Moselle Bay, South Africa, after circumnavigating the Cape of Good Hope, thus becoming the first European to reach the southernmost point of the globe.
1969 - Yasser Arafat takes over the presidency of the Palestine Liberation Organization, at the meeting of the Palestinian National Council held in Cairo.
2015 - It was announced that the Jordanian pilot, Moaz al-Kasasbeh, had been burned to death by ISIS a month earlier. The Jordanian government responded by executing Sajida al-Rishawi and Ziad al-Karbouli.
