CAIRO – 1 December 2021: Archaeologists have discovered the remains of a 41,500-year-old necklace made of mammoth ivory and adorned with piercing marks in Poland.

Using radioactive carbon, the necklace was found to be about 41,500 years old, according to Live Science.

The two-piece necklace was found during archaeological excavations conducted in Stajnia Cave, Poland. It is the oldest piece of jewelry that indicates the presence of homo sapiens in Eurasia.

"The decoration of the necklace included patterns of more than 50 hole marks in an irregular circular curve, and two full holes," said the team of archaeologists.

They noted that each hole could represent a successful hunting of animals or cycles of the moon or the sun.

"It is the oldest known [jewelry] of its kind in Eurasia and sets a new beginning date for a tradition directly linked to the spread of modern Homo sapiens in Europe," the researchers wrote in the study.

“The necklace was most likely worn around someone's neck, but we can't be sure,” said study lead author Sahra Talamo, a professor of chemistry at the University of Bologna in Italy who specializes in human evolution and radiocarbon dating.
