ET commemorates Egypt’s legendary composer Baligh Hamdi on his birth anniversary

CAIRO – 7 October 2021: Egyptian legendary composer Baligh Hamdi was born on October 7, 1931 and mastered playing the oud at the age of nine. 

He joined the Fouad I Music Institute (now the Institute of Arab Music) and started his career as a singer where he recorded 4 songs on the Egyptian radio. 

 

Hamdi then shifted to composing and achieved fame in 1957 when he introduced the first musical composition to Abdel Halim Hafez (Tkhonoh). 

 

The late musical icon had also collaborated with the most famous Egyptian and Arab singers including Umm Kulthum, Warda, Fayza Ahmed, Shadia, Nagat, Sabah, Mayada el-Hennawy, Aziza Galal, Ali el Haggar, Hany Shaker, Mohamed Roshdy, Samira Said and Latifa. 

 

Hamdi died on September 12, 1993 at the age of 62, leaving a wealth of artistic melodies.
