CAIRO – 5 October 2021: World Teachers' Day has been celebrated annually on October 5 since 1994, to commemorate the signing of the 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation on the Status of Teachers.
This Recommendation establishes benchmarks related to the rights and responsibilities of teachers, standards for their initial preparation and subsequent training, recruitment and employment, and conditions for teaching and learning.
The UNESCO recommendation regarding the status of teaching staff in higher education was adopted in 1997 to supplement the 1966 Recommendation regarding the status of teaching and research staff in higher education.
Following the adoption of Sustainable Development Goal 4 on education, and the endorsement of Monitor 4c dedicated to the key role of teachers in achieving the 2030 Education Agenda, World Teachers' Day has become an opportunity to celebrate achievements and consider ways to address the remaining challenges, in order to strengthen the teaching profession.
It is worth noting that World Teachers' Day is being organized in partnership between the United Nations Children's Fund, the United Nations Development Programme, the International Labor Organization and the International Federation of Teachers.
