CAIRO - 31 August 2021: U.S. Ambassador Jonathan R. Cohen visited Habu city in Luxor on Monday.

Since 1995, the U.S. government through USAID has supported Chicago House’s restoration work at  Habu city, including a current $6 million investment in the development of Habu as an open-air museum and tourist site.

Ambassador Cohen noted, “The U.S. government partners with Americans and Egyptians to preserve Egypt’s cultural heritage, which contributes to Egypt’s economy through tourism and job creation, and has funded the protection of some of Egypt’s most valuable cultural assets.”

Cohen enjoyed the magnificent Luxor Temple tour, saying , “The U.S. government, through USAID, invested over $102 million to protect many of Egypt’s most valuable cultural assets, contributing to Egypt’s economy.”

It is worth mentioning that Cohen, USAID/Egypt Acting Mission Director Margaret Sancho, and Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Khaled El-Enany inaugurated the restored Wakalet el-Geddawy, a caravanserai built in 1792.
