Born August 23, 1972 in Algeria, Massi began her career as performer in the Algerian political rock band Atakor. After many death threats related to political messages of Atakor, she left both the band and the country in 1999. In the same year she moved to Paris and was invited to perform at the Femmes d’Algeria (“Women of Algeria”) concert, which led to her to a recording contract with Island Records.
Her musical styling can be characterized as Western with strong rock, jazz and country influences. Massi sings in classical Arabic, Algerian Arabic, French, sometimes English, Berber and Kabyle languages.
Her latest performance in Egypt was with the Cairo Steps, “The Best of Souad Massi” concert in April, which was held near the pyramids.
