Egypt’s ‘Cave of Swimmers’: A Hidden Gem

CAIRO – 16 June 2021: One of the most famous rock art sites in Egypt’s Western desert is located in the Gilf Kebir plateau of the Sahara. 

Dubbed "Cave of swimmers", it has paintings that depict human figures with their limbs bent as if they were swimming.

These paintings have been estimated to span back between 9,000 and 6,000 years BC. 

An imprint of rock art that is both elusive and enigmatic. A true hidden gem.
