Egypt’s BA presents lecture on rare painting of Goddess Nemesis on June 14

CAIRO – 14 June 2021: The Antiquities Museum and Zahi Hawass Center for Egyptology, affiliated to the Bibliotheca Alexandrina’s Cultural Communication Sector, are organizing an online lecture entitled “Studying a Rare Painting Representing the Goddess Nemesis from the Collections of the BA Antiquities Museum.”

The lecture will be broadcast online on June 14 at 7:30 p.m. on the Bibliotheca Alexandrina Antiquities Museum website.

The lecture sheds light on one of the holdings of the Antiquities Museum, a rare panel with relief carving, one of the rarest scenes depicted on carved panels in Egypt or abroad during the Roman era.

The painting presents a composite image of Goddess Nemesis, made up of several different elements, which at first glance seem disparate and incoherent in nature.

Despite the painting's uniqueness and importance, it was never studied independently or integrally. Previous readings were limited to describing the elements of the painting only, with some attempts to name those elements, but without any study to justify these possible labels, and without analysis of the subjects depicted on them.

Thus, the divergence of opinions about the interpretation of the elements that make up the painting has prevented the definitive identification of the painting.

From here, the importance of this study comes in reading the painting and analyzing its elements, with the aim of reaching a link that includes those elements, with a discussion of the artistic style, which contributes to arriving at knowing its purpose.
