CAIRO – 29 November 2020: Egypt has exported 4.8 million tons of agricultural products since January, according to a report by the Central Administration for Agricultural Quarantine affiliated to the Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation.
The report released on Sunday indicates that the main exported crops are citrus, potato, onion, grapes, pomegranate, garlic, mango, strawberry, green beans, guava, cucumber, bell pepper, and eggplant.
The breakdown is 1.42 million tons of citrus; 678,600 tons of potato; 401,357 tons of onion; 138,847 tons of grapes; 90,969 tons of pomegranate; 46,272 tons of mango; 35,109 tons of garlic; 20,495 tons of green beans; 7,189 tons of guava; 3,700 tons of cucumber; 3,676 tons of bell pepper; 1,573 tons of eggplant; and, 660 tons of strawberry.
Egypt ranked third globally in 2019 in the exports of dried onion with a total of 13.6 tons.
The Egyptian onion exports in 2019 reached $ 30.4 million, representing 8.1% of the total global exports of dried onions in 2019, according to data released by the UN's International Trade Center (ITC).
India comes first with exports amounting to $118 million while the US comes second with $79-million-dollar.
The Netherlands (29%), Germany (25%), Japan (13%), the US (4%) and Croatia (4%) are Egypt's top dried onion importers.
Egypt’s agricultural sector contributes to the gross domestic product (GDP) by 14 percent, representing 28 percent of job opportunities and 55 percent of rural employment in Egypt, Minister of International Cooperation Rania Al-Mashat said in July.
The returns of agricultural exports increased by 20 percent in 2019 compared to 2009, and vegetable exports increased by 40 percent over the same period.
The Central Administration for Agricultural Quarantine pointed out that the exports of grapes, garlic, strawberry, grenade, and green beans rose by 10-30 percent in 2020 compared to 2019.
