CAIRO – 21 July 2020: The Central Bank of Egypt announced Thursday, July 23, to be an official holiday on the occasion of the 68th anniversary of the 23 July Revolution.
The banks will resume work on Sunday, 26 July, the CBE added in a press statement.
The Egyptian July 23 Revolution took place on July 23, 1952 by the Free Officers Movement, a group of army officers led by Mohammed Naguib and Gamal Abdel Nasser. The coup aimed at overthrowing King Farouk’s regime.
The movement had more political ambitions, and quickly moved to abolish the constitutional monarchy and aristocracy of Egypt and Sudan, aiming to establish a republic, end the British occupation of the country, and securing the independence of Sudan.
CBE’s last holiday was on Wednesday and Thursday, July 1 and 2, on the occasion of the seventh anniversary of the June 30 Revolution and the end of fiscal year 2019/2020.
