CAIRO – 18 June 2020: Egypt’s industrial production index for transformative and extractive industries, excluding crude oil and petroleum products, decreased 5.4 percent, recording LE 108.8 (primary) during March 2020, compared to LE 115 (final) during February 2020, the state's statistics body said.

The index of food products industry reached 203.91 during March 2020, up from 183.01 February 2020, marking an increase of 11.4 percent due to the high demand to prepare for the month of Ramadan.

The Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) added that the index of the beverage industry increased to 179.73 in March, compared to 158.21, recording a rise of 13.6 percent, due to the high demand to enter the summer season.

On the other hand, the textile industry index dropped 15.1 percent, reaching 69.72 during March 2020, compared to reaching 82.16 in February. CAPMAS attributed the decrease to the decrease in the number of working hours and employment as a result of coronavirus crisis.

The index of electrical appliances industry hit 80.96 during March 2020 compared to 89.15 in February, recording a decrease of 9.2 percent, due to the interruption of production lines and the decrease in the number of workers.
